Listening - The 25% Factor

E-mail Print
Listening is an art form and a science - Human beings by their very nature are not good listeners. We have a lack of focus and an inability to put ourselves in someone else's shoes at that right moment in order to capture what others say to us.

There have been countless studies done on how well people listen - what they retain and are able to use from all that is said to them. Do you know at what percentage (%) the normal person listens - what I mean here is - how much do people really get from what is said to them on a daily basis - go ahead and make your guess!

Well, I hope you read the title of this Weekly Lesson, if you did that means that your guess was 25% and you are correct. Incredible!!

Do you understand what that statistic means - no - well here you go. If you are a normal Human Being and you live to be 100 years old - 75 years of your Life will have been a waste of time and effort because you are not an effective listener. That's right, unless you learn how to listen, retain and use what you hear - 75% of what is said to you is going right over your head.

The Lesson:
Learning how to listen is a critical Life Skill. There are three things that must be done to improve listening skills - 1) Be quiet - 2) Look people in the eye when they are speaking - 3) When the other person is finished with their thought, as a question or make a declarative statement to make sure that they know that you have understood them.
